I call this one “The Monk” and is carved in a beautiful piece of Black Walnut. It stands about 3ft tall and is about 6 inches diameter. I just love the grain in the Walnut.

First Dragon carving

2004
10.19

Here is my first dragon. The wood is Catalpa (large leafs with large bean/vanila) and is amazing to work with. It seems to be medium hard and holds detail very well.  I worked on this piece for about 250 hours. Create a user account and login to check out detailed pictures of the carving of the dragon.

I entered the dragon in the 2004 Chippingaway wood carving contest and won first place, beginers class. Not bad considering I only started carving in Nov 2003!  Checkout the competition results at http://www.chippingaway.com/CarvingCompetitionResults.htm Check out the highlights of the conference http://www.chippingaway.com/HighlightPhotos.htm By the way, this was the best conference I ever went too.
